Langidalur is a beautiful valley in the scenic Þórsmörk area of south Iceland. Þórsmörk, also known as Thorsmork, is a nature reserve between the glaciers Tindfjallajökull and Eyjafjallajökull. The spectacular Þórsmörk region offers landscapes ranging from towering mountains to scores of glacial streams and miles of black sand. Þórsmörk is not an easy region to get to, as there are river crossings, and you need a vehicle that has a high enough clearance to cross. The area has waterfalls, canyons, lush vegetation, and vast open spaces. Making it here is no easy feat. Do not venture out in a compact car. Because of the Krossá River, this wet and turbulent ride requires a Jeep.


Where is Langidalur Located?

Langidalur is located in the Þórsmörk nature reserve, which is situated in the southern part of Iceland, between the glaciers Tindfjallajökull and Eyjafjallajökull. The area is known for its rugged terrain, glacial rivers, and unique geological formations. To reach Langidalur, you typically need to take a specialized 4x4 vehicle due to the rough and unsealed F-roads that lead into the Þórsmörk area. The journey itself can be an adventure, offering breathtaking views.

When to Visit Langidalur

The best time to visit Langidalur is during the summer months when the weather is more favourable, and the area is accessible. However, even during summer, the weather in Iceland's highlands can be unpredictable, so come prepared, wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and have all the necessary supplies for your time in the area.

Attractions Near Langidalur

Eyjafjallajökull Volcano

Its proximity to Þórsmörk means you can view the volcano from a distance. While not accessible for direct exploration due to its location, Eyjafjallajökull gained international attention during its explosive 2010 eruption that halted air traffic for several days.

Volcano Huts

Located near Langidalur, Volcano Huts offer accommodations and amenities for visitors exploring the Þórsmörk area. The huts are a hub for hikers and provide a comfortable base for your adventures.

Krossá River

The glacial river Krossá flows through Þórsmörk, and its turquoise waters add to the area's visual appeal. Several hiking trails are near its banks.

Gígjökull Lagoon

This glacier lagoon is located near Langidalur and offers a chance to see icebergs that have calved from the glacier, a striking landscape.
