Into the Upside Down: Háifoss & Þjórsárdalur Tour

Háifoss is one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, plunging dramatically into a deep gorge carved by volcanic activity and glacial rivers. The surrounding landscape is vast and raw, with steep cliffs, open plateaus, and sweeping views across the Highlands.

Hjálparfoss is a distinctive double waterfall where two rivers meet, cascading side by side into a shared pool. Surrounded by dark lava formations and geometric basalt columns, the area showcases the contrast between Iceland’s volcanic terrain and flowing water. A short and accessible walk leads to viewpoints around the falls, making this an excellent introduction to Iceland’s raw highland scenery.

The Commonwealth Farm in Þjórsárdalur is a carefully reconstructed Viking farm based on archaeological remains from the 11th century. Based on the excavated remains of Stöng, that were buried under volcanic tephra in the 11th century, the farm offers a unique insight into early Icelandic life, traditional turf house construction, and the challenges faced by the country’s first settlers.
