If your idea of a great workplace is a dark-wood hut at the foot of Europe's largest glacier, Skaftafell might just be it. Run by Icelandic Mountain Guides, our base camp sits in the heart of the Skaftafell campsite in Vatnajökull National Park and is the starting point for our glacier hikes, ice climbing and ice cave tours on Vatnajökull's outlet glaciers.
Where you'll be working
You'll find the base camp in the heart of the Skaftafell campsite, right next to the visitor centre, at the end of road no. 998 where it branches off the Ring Road (road no. 1) beneath the mighty Vatnajökull glacier. It's roughly a five-hour drive from Reykjavík (327 km), 2.5 hours from Vík and 1.5–2 hours from Höfn. The hut is easy to spot: it's the dark-wood building marked with the "Icelandic Mountain Guides, Skaftafell Base Camp" sign.
Life at base camp
From here our certified glacier guides head out daily onto outlet glaciers such as Falljökull and Svínafellsjökull, leading everything from easy blue-ice walks to ice cave explorations, ice climbing and full-day mountain adventures. Our guides hold the highest level of glacier training and love bringing the landscape to life for guests, sharing their knowledge of the area's geology, glaciology, flora and fauna. Skaftafell is known for its comparatively mild weather and its contrasting landscapes of glaciers, mountains and green plains, which makes it a remarkable place to spend a working season.
Who thrives here
This is a place for people who feel at home outdoors and want to share that with others. Whether you're an experienced mountain guide, working towards your certifications, or part of the team that keeps the base camp and its tours running smoothly, you'll join a close-knit crew doing meaningful work in one of Iceland's most spectacular corners.
