Laugavegur Trail Self Guided
Walk Iceland's most famous trail at your own pace on this 5-day self-guided Laugavegur trek.
5 days•Languages: English
The Laugavegur Trail from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk is Iceland's most famous multi-day hike. On this self-guided package you walk it entirely at your own pace. Over five days you cross 59 kilometres (37 miles) of the southern highlands, sleeping in mountain huts, with your luggage carried between them so you only need to carry a daypack.
Trekking the Laugavegur on your own terms is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the Icelandic interior. The trail is well marked and, through the summer, busy enough that you are never truly alone, yet going self-guided gives you the freedom to set your own rhythm, stop for photos when the light is right, and soak in the hot springs without watching the clock.
Each day brings a new landscape: the multicoloured rhyolite mountains and obsidian fields around Hrafntinnusker, the lake at Álftavatn, the black-sand deserts of Mælifellssandur, the deep Markarfljót canyon, and finally the birch woods of Þórsmörk, the ‘woods of Thor’. It is no surprise National Geographic has named this one of the best treks in the world.

Are you wondering about something?
If you're planning a trip to Iceland, it's important to be prepared with the right information. Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) to help you plan your trip
This is not suited to beginner trekkers as this is mountainous terrain with 6-7 hour of hiking per day. We recommend this for hikers who are physically active with previous basic trekking experience.
We provide a full packing list that includes information about layers, waterproofs, footwear, and other recommended or optional items. For your safety, we recommend aqua shoes over plastic or open-toe sandals as we cross rivers.
We recommend bringing a waterproof duffel bag or similar, with a maximum weight of 18 kg. This is because the transport vehicles will be crossing rivers and have limited storage capacity. The huts along the route also offer limited space for storing luggage. In addition to your main bag, you'll need a day backpack and essentials for the daily treks.
Sleeping bags are required on the tour as you are staying in dormitory style huts on tour. You can rent one if preferred, by adding this during the checkout process. If you forgot to add this when you originally booked, please let us know and we can add this for you.
The huts in the highlands are dormitory style accommodation, with shared sleeping areas and twin/single bunk beds, so be prepared to share a room with your fellow hikers.
Toilets and shower facilities are available in the highlands, for a small fee paid on site, and include soap and toilet paper. Towels, shampoo etc would be something you bring yourself.
