Adventure Stay is a private overnight experience in a small, off-grid hut in the wild landscapes near Mýrdalsjökull on Iceland's South Coast. Your stay includes a guided one-hour buggy ride with Icelandic Mountain Guides across the black sands of Sólheimasandur to its famous plane wreck, before you are dropped at your hut for the night. The hut sleeps two and is available year-round.

FAQ

Are you wondering about something?

If you're planning a trip to Iceland, it's important to be prepared with the right information. Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) to help you plan your trip

The Adventure Stay Hut

Each Adventure Stay is a small, private hut designed for two people. Inside you'll find:

  • A comfortable double bed
  • A compact kitchenette with running water, a sink, cooktop and basic kitchenware
  • Heating and lighting (indoor and outdoor)
  • USB charging ports (the hut is off-grid and solar-powered, so standard electrical outlets are not available)
  • Wi-Fi and a Bluetooth speaker
  • A cold-storage compartment for food and drinks

The hut has a dry toilet which is a sealed, bag-based system connected to a septic tank, not a flushing or running-water toilet. The toilet is clean and functional for short stays, but compact: guests sit to use it, and space around it is tight.

Please note: because of the hut's size and layout, the experience may feel tight for very large or tall guests, particularly when using the toilet.

The Location

The hut sits on a sheltered hill just west of our Mýrdalsjökull base camp, chosen for privacy, shelter from the area's strong winds, and its sweeping outlook. From here you look out over the black-sand plains below, the Atlantic Ocean and the Vestmannaeyjar islands in the distance, with the top of Eyjafjallajökull glacier to the west. The glass walls and ceiling make it ideal for stargazing and, in the darker months, Northern Lights viewing, conditions permitting. The location is completely off-grid and only reachable with a guide.

Getting There & What's Included

Adventure is part of the experience from start to finish. You meet us at the Mýrdalsjökull base camp and set off on a one-hour buggy ride down to the black sands of Sólheimasandur and its iconic plane wreck, before being driven to your hut for the night.

Your stay includes:

  • A guided 1-hour buggy ride to the Sólheimasandur plane wreck
  • Guided transfer to and from the hut
  • One night's accommodation in the private hut
  • A light dinner and a light breakfast

The location is completely off-grid and inaccessible without a guide but carefully selected with safety measures in mind. You'll have a direct line to our base-camp staff, a few minutes away, and a full emergency-evacuation plan is in place for the area.

Why Choose Adventure Stay?

  • Glass walls and ceiling, ideal for stargazing and Northern Lights
  • Real privacy: no crowds, no neighbours, no traffic
  • The feeling of sleeping in a tent, with a real bed, heating, Wi-Fi and USB charging
  • Uninterrupted views of glaciers, black-sand plains and the Atlantic Ocean
  • A guided buggy ride to the Sólheimasandur plane wreck included
  • A rare chance to experience Iceland's wilderness in silence and solitude

Who is this for?

Adventure Stay is perfect for:

  • Couples and adventurous travellers seeking privacy and remoteness
  • Guests who value atmosphere and location over luxury finishes
  • Travellers comfortable with compact spaces and simple facilities
  • Anyone pairing it with a glacier tour at Sólheimajökull or an adventure tour at Mýrdalsjökull

It may not suit:

  • Travellers expecting hotel-level comfort or spacious interiors
  • Guests uncomfortable with a dry-toilet system
  • Very large or tall guests, or anyone needing step-free/wheelchair access (the entrance door is smaller than standard, with two steps up)
