This four-day winter adventure packs the highlights of southwest Iceland into one small-group hiking trip. You explore the historic, geological wonder of Þingvellir National Park, the mighty Gullfoss waterfall and the erupting hot springs of the Geysir geothermal area, then head to the south coast for its vast black-sand beaches and the famous waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Between these natural wonders, your guide leads the group on hikes and snowshoe walks among bubbling hot springs, volcanic fissures and steaming rivers, plus a thrilling walk on a glacier. Three nights are spent at a cosy countryside hostel where your guide doubles as chef, cooking up traditional Icelandic dinners. With dark winter skies far from city lights, it is an ideal base for hunting the Northern Lights.

Some meeting points don't have traditional addresses as they are parking lots or or mountain base camps in remote areas or, but you can always find these locations on Google Maps and see directions on the map above.
Before we head to the glacier for the tour, we need to get everyone fitted with the equipment (protective overalls, helmets and goggles for snowmobile tours, crampons and harnesses for glacier hikes, dry suit for kayak touts, etc.). Some equipment needs to be adjusted to each person's, so people must arrive 30 minutes before so everyone is ready at the departure time.
We always recommend booking as soon as you are ready, especially if you have a strict travel schedule or a large group. Changing or cancelling your tour is easy and free of charge until 24 hours before departure by emailing us (info@mountainguides.is). Tours can also be purchased on the day of as long as spaces are available.
This is an active winter tour with 6–7 hours of walking on most days, including hikes and snowshoe walks over uneven, sometimes snowy terrain. You should be in good physical condition and comfortable hiking in mountainous terrain while carrying a daypack. No technical mountaineering experience is required, but a reasonable level of fitness will help you enjoy it.
No – the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed. That said, staying three nights in the countryside, far from city lights, gives you far better odds than a single evening tour. Whenever conditions are favourable, your guide will lead the group out to watch for them.
You stay three nights at a cosy countryside hostel in double or twin rooms with shared facilities. Your guide cooks traditional Icelandic dinners on site, and breakfasts and packed lunches are provided so you are fuelled for each day on the trail.
Bring sturdy, waterproof hiking boots, warm layers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a hat and a daypack. Specialist gear for the glacier walk and snowshoes are provided. A swimsuit and towel are handy for the hot river and the optional Fontana Spa visit.
No previous experience is needed. The glacier walk on Sólheimajökull is led by a qualified guide who provides all the necessary technical equipment and a safety briefing before you set out. A reasonable level of fitness is all that is required.
