Unveil the mysteries beneath: Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel Adventure

Delve deep underground on this adventurous lava tunnel tour, just 30 minutes from Reykjavík. Raufarhólshellir is an ideal tour for geology buffs and adventure-seekers. You will see the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while walking in the path of lava that flowed thousands of years ago. This is an easy, guided tour with no caving experience required

Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel is one of the largest in Iceland, reaching 30 metres wide and 10 metres high; it’s a spectacular sight. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light, revealing a fantastic range of colours along the tunnel walls.

Before you head into the tunnel, an expert guide will provide you with the necessary gear, a flashlight and a protective helmet and give a short safety briefing and introduction to the lava tunnel.

Then, you get to head in! This is a tour for the senses. You will experience a new underground world, hear the echoes inside the cave and feel the sheer force of Icelandic nature. You will learn new things about Iceland’s unique geology and appreciate the structure's beauty. Film buffs will be delighted as you will see where scenes from the Hollywood movie Noah, with Anthony Hopkins, were filmed in this lava cave.

The length of the lava tunnel is an astonishing 1360 metres (4500 ft), with the main tunnel being 900 metres (3000 ft) long, making it one of the most expansive lava tunnels in Iceland. You can walk about 350 metres into the lava tunnel, and the temperature inside remains around 4 degrees Celsius although it can be warmer outside.
