The Timeline of the 2024 Volcanic Eruptions on Reykjanes: The Sundhnúkagígar Fires
In late October 2023, the Icelandic Meteorological Office recorded a surge in seismic activity near the small town of Grindavík. On the 14th of January, a new volcanic fissure erupted in the same crater chain, a few hundred meters from Grindavík. Hours later, another fissure opened just north of the town, leaving lava engulfing three residential houses.
Due to the timely evacuation efforts, the houses were all empty. By the following morning, the lava flow towards the town had halted. The eruption in the initial, longer fissure also ended after less than 50 hours.
On February 8th, another volcanic fissure eruption began in the Sundhnukagigar crater row. The eruption lasted less than 24 hours and ended on February 9th.
On the 16th of March, Sundhnúkagígar erupted again. This eruption began with remarkable intensity, marked by the highest magma discharge among the Sundhnúkagígar eruptions. However, as night fell, the eruption's intensity subsided, but the eruption lasted for nearly two months and ended on May 9th.
On May 29, a new eruption started at the Sundhnúkur crater row with great intensity, featuring impressive lava fountains. The lava quickly flowed over Grindavík road. By the next day, the eruption's intensity decreased significantly and eruptive activity soon consolidated into one vent. The eruption lasted for 24 days and ended on the 22nd of June.
On August 22nd, a new volcanic eruption began near the site of a previous one from last May. The fissure initially extended up to approximately 7 kilometers, but activity began to decrease the following day, accompanied by a decline in seismic activity. Currently, two active eruptive vents remain along the northern section of the fissure. While the intensity of the eruption has diminished, it has remained relatively stable.
Similar to past eruptions in this region, this event is localised and does not affect international travel to or from Iceland or tour operations outside Reykjanes. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the immediate area of the eruption to ensure their safety and that of the emergency response teams.
