The Blue Lagoon Experience

History of the Blue Lagoon

Although it is naturally heated by geothermal activity deep beneath the Earth’s surface, the Blue Lagoon is man-made. It was not always intended to be the luxurious spa experience you see today.

In 1976, with the Svartsengi geothermal power plant's debut, engineers anticipated the runoff water would vanish into the nearby volcanic rock. But nature had another plan. A mesmerizing lagoon formed, its milky-blue waters enriched with minerals and silica, painting a picture straight out of a fairy tale.

During the early 1980s, locals began to embrace the warmth of this magical pool. With no changing rooms or showers back then, they'd either change in their cars or face the brisk open air before immersing themselves in the soothing waters. Bathing in the milky-blue lagoon became a popular past-time as word spread that the minerals left skin feeling baby-soft and could even alleviate skin conditions such as psoriasis. Whispered tales of the lagoon's rejuvenating abilities spread like wildfire. Many claimed it worked wonders on their skin, and even those without skin concerns felt reborn after a soak.

The year 1992 marked the official birth of the Blue Lagoon Company. The love for the lagoon grew so immense that facilities like changing rooms and showers became essential. The lagoon's evolution continued, blossoming into a haven with luxurious spas, exquisite restaurants, a shop selling Blue Lagoon beauty products, cutting-edge research centers, and two cozy hotels.

Getting to the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon can be found on the Reykjanes Peninsula, a forty-five-minute drive (around 50 kilometres) from Reykjavík. It’s surrounded by a rugged lava field over 800 years old, making it a truly spectacular sight to behold.

But the real bonus of the Blue Lagoon’s location is how close it is to Iceland’s only international airport. Just 25 kilometres from Keflavik Airport, you can easily include a trip to the Blue Lagoon with your airport transfers from Reykjavík. Opt for a Blue Lagoon transfer straight from your arrival flight for a relaxing introduction to Iceland’s unique scenery, or end your stay on the island with a Blue Lagoon session before you board your flight home.

If you don’t have time before or after your flight for an indulgent soak, perhaps pair a trip around the Golden Circle with a stop at the Blue Lagoon, or simply book transfers from Reykjavík to the Blue Lagoon and spend as long as you want dining, reclining and unwinding.

Experiences at the Blue Lagoon

Even the most basic entrance package to the Blue Lagoon comes with a little luxury. The comfort package includes entrance to the lagoon, use of a towel, a silica mud mask for radiant skin and a free drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) to enjoy as you soak. Upgrading to the premium package includes everything in the comfort package plus two additional masks to use in the water, a bathrobe and a glass of sparkling wine with your meal in the Lava restaurant. For a real treat, the luxury package includes up to five hours at the exclusive Retreat Spa.

While simply soaking in the soothingly warm water of the lagoon itself feels like a luxury experience, there are a few extra perks around the water’s edge. Embrace the ancient Icelandic art of sauna in the sauna and steam room, opt for an in-water massage to work the knots out of sore muscles or perhaps try a float therapy session.

Food and drink at the Blue Lagoon

Apart from the free drink included with all entry packages at the Blue Lagoon, you can buy additional drinks at the swim-up bar during your visit. Once you’ve had your fill of soaking and unwinding, you can fuel up at one of the lagoon’s numerous dining spots. Those looking for a quick bite to eat with no fuss can head to the café which offers quick meals like soups and open sandwiches. If you’re indulging in a spa session, the Spa Restaurant lets you dine in your robe. Then there are the fine-dining options. Lava restaurant serves gourmet Icelandic dishes in dramatic surroundings, overlooking the lagoon. While Moss restaurant features in the Michelin guide and offers a tasting menu presented with artistic precision, showing off the length and breadth of Icelandic produce.
