The Electric and Accessible Flybus

These new vehicles are the first electric Flybuses of their kind in Iceland and mark a milestone not only in reducing emissions, but also in improving accessibility for travellers who use wheelchairs.

Electric Flybus: A First for Airport Transfers in Iceland

Icelandia has recently welcomed the first fully electric Flybus into service, making it the first electric airport transfer bus in the country. A second identical vehicle will join the fleet shortly, further expanding the service.

This is the beginning of a broader electrification of the Flybus fleet and part of Icelandia’s long-term commitment to cleaner, more environmentally friendly passenger transport.

Electric vehicles help reduce:

  • local emissions
  • noise pollution
  • the overall carbon footprint of travel to and from the airport

For travellers, this means a quieter, smoother ride — and for Iceland, it means another step forward in sustainable mobility.

Improved Accessibility: Travel in Your Own Wheelchair

One of the most important features of the new electric Flybus vehicles is full wheelchair accessibility.

Each bus is equipped with a wheelchair lift, allowing passengers to:

  • remain seated in their own wheelchair during the journey
  • board and exit the bus safely and comfortably

Until now, Flybus transfers could only accommodate foldable wheelchairs stored in the luggage compartment. With the new vehicles, passengers who use wheelchairs no longer need to transfer out of their chair — a significant improvement in comfort, dignity, and independence.

This change represents a meaningful step forward in making airport transfers in Iceland more inclusive.

How to Book a Wheelchair-Accessible Flybus Transfer

If you’re travelling with a wheelchair, booking an accessible Flybus is straightforward — but advance notice is required.

What you need to know:

  • Wheelchair-accessible Flybus transfers must be booked at least 72 hours in advance
  • This ensures that an electric Flybus with a wheelchair lift is reserved for your journey
  • Due to space limitations, only one wheelchair space is available per booking
  • Travel companions are welcome to join on the same bus but must book their seats separately

Because Flybus operates with flexible departure times, our service team will contact you before your trip to:

  • confirm your arrival time
  • ensure an accessible vehicle is ready when you land

Travelling with children (ages 1–5) who require wheelchair access?

Please contact our customer service team directly at info@icelandia.com.
Due to technical limitations in the booking system, wheelchair-accessible transfers for young children must currently be arranged manually.

All accessibility requests — including those for children — must be made at least 72 hours before travel.

Part of a Bigger Vision: Electrifying Icelandia’s Fleet

The new electric Flybus vehicles are part of a much larger transformation underway at Icelandia.

In the coming weeks, construction will begin on what will become the largest charging hub of its kind in Iceland, located at Klettagarðar 27. Once completed, the facility will be capable of charging:

  • up to 81 buses and vehicles simultaneously
  • with high-capacity chargers delivering at least 200 kW per charging point
  • supported by a 3 MW power connection

The charging hub is a key foundation for the full electrification of Icelandia’s fleet and a major step in advancing greener public transport in the Reykjavík area.

By the end of this year, Icelandia will operate 17 electric vehicles, with many more to follow in the coming years. Several Icelandia brands, including Flybus, Reykjavík Excursions, and Hop On - Hop Off, will benefit from this shared infrastructure.

“Our goal is to be at the forefront of energy transition in passenger transport. These new electric vehicles are an important part of that journey, and we are especially pleased to improve accessibility for wheelchair users at the same time,”
says Björn Ragnarsson, CEO of Icelandia.

A More Inclusive and Sustainable Journey

With electric Flybus vehicles that are quieter, cleaner, and fully wheelchair accessible, Icelandia is proud to offer a more inclusive airport transfer experience — without compromising on comfort or reliability.

This is just the beginning. As more electric vehicles join the fleet and infrastructure continues to grow, travellers can expect even more sustainable and accessible transport options in Iceland.

Mt Gunnbjörn, the Highest Peak in Greenland

Are you dreaming of an Arctic adventure of a lifetime? This 5-day tour has you scaling the highest peak of the Arctic (3694 m/12120 ft). Mt. Gunnbjörn has been called the 8th continental peak due to its massive size, and it beckons climbers from around the world. On the east coast, where towering mountains rise from the Greenland icecap, the conditions are pristine and similar to those in Antarctica. There’s nothing quite like challenging yourself to climb in one of the most isolated areas of the north, with the fresh Arctic air and stark white snow. An experienced and qualified guide will lead the group, keeping participants safe and informed. This is not a trek for a beginner as the hike is considered strenuous, and participants should have mountain climbing experience and be prepared to camp for four nights. Mt. Gunnbjörn is easily accessible on a ski plane from Iceland. Once in the Watkins Mountains, we set up a comfortable base camp at the foot of the mountain. To make the summit day more manageable, we establish one camp on the way to the summit. The climb can be done on snowshoes, with the last part done on crampons.
