4-Day Laugavegur Trek (Huts)

Hike Iceland's most famous trail in four days - guided, hut to hut, luggage carried between huts.

4 daysLanguages: English

Iceland's most famous trail in four days: 56 km from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk, with a certified guide, three nights in mountain huts and your luggage carried between them.

The Laugavegur is Iceland's best-known trekking route, and it earns the reputation. Over four days you walk the full 56 km (35 miles) from the geothermal hot springs of Landmannalaugar to the green valley of Þórsmörk, crossing colourful rhyolite mountains, black sand desert and glacial rivers on a trail National Geographic ranked among the 20 best in the world.

This is the shorter version of our classic guided Laugavegur trek, the same trail and the same mountain huts, with the return to Reykjavík on day four instead of day five. Your main luggage is transferred between the huts, so you walk with a daypack. Departures run in July and August.

A certified guide leads the group, usually six to fourteen walkers, and points out the trail's landmarks and its quieter corners along with the stories and folklore behind them. Nights are spent in the Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn and Botnar huts, in shared dormitories, with a hot meal waiting at the end of each day.

On day four the trail drops through arctic birch woods into Þórsmörk (Thorsmork), the woods of Thor, and finishes at Húsadalur, where the Highland Bus carries you back to Reykjavík that evening.

The trek leaves from BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavík at 6:30 on day one. The minimum age is 14, and you should be physically active and comfortable walking four to seven hours a day, depending on the stage, in mountain terrain.
