Hrútsfjallstindar Peaks
15 hours•Languages: English
Summiting the 1,875m Hrútfjallstindar peaks is a mighty challenge but a highly rewarding one with truly magnificent views.
Hrútfjallstindar Peaks 1875m
Hrútfjallstindar is the name of the impressive peaks dominating the skyline to the north of the Svínafellsjökull Glacier.
The peaks are four in number and the highest stands at 1875m (6,150ft) high. For many years, the peaks have challenged serious climbers and several climbing routes are already established.
Hikers can make their way up without technical difficulties along the alpine trekking route. The Hrútsfjallstindar Peaks is on par with our popular summit of Hvannadalshnúkur (2110m), the highest mountain in Iceland, but offers even more magnificent views.
The hike is demanding and lasts about 12-15 hours. The route offers amazing views of the Öræfajökull massif as well as the Skaftafellsjökull and Svínafellsjökull valley glaciers. No special mountaineering skills are required but the hike is physically demanding.
Please note that a minimum of two participants and a guide meets our standard of ascending and descending the summit in the safest way possible. We recommend leaving a few days free before and after the scheduled departure date in case we need to cancel or make changes to a departure due to lack of participation or weather conditions.

The mountain is located on the northwestern rim of the Öræfajökull volcano and promises an unforgettable hike with breathtaking panoramic views. This is not a beginners’ hike; be prepared for a challenging climb befitting those with ample climbing experience and in fantastic physical shape. No special technical skills are required, but we recommend packing the items on our equipment list (see below). The climb will be mentally and physically gruelling, but absolutely worth it.
