Folklore & History of Jósepsdalur

Jósepsdalur is a valley shaped by nature as well as some spooky stories.

According to local legend, a troll woman once lived in a cave here. Later, the valley was home to a blacksmith named Jósep, known for his skills, and his relentless swearing. Folklore says his curses were so powerful that his farm sank into the ground, leaving the valley eerily empty.

Icelandic poetry even describes Jósepsdalur as a place so desolate that no sheep dared to graze there.

In the 1930s, Jósepsdalur became one of Iceland’s early skiing destinations. The ski club Ármann chose the valley as their base and, before roads existed, volunteers carried building materials by hand to construct a mountain hut in 1936.

The first hut burned down in 1942. A second attempt was destroyed by a storm before completion. Still, they persisted, building again in 1943 with reinforced concrete.

For decades, the valley was filled with skiers, tow lifts, and winter activity. Today, the skiing has quieted, but the spirit of adventure remains.

Motorsports & Off-Road Culture

Jósepsdalur is also home to part of the riding area managed by VÍK (Vélhjólaíþróttaklúbburinn), one of Iceland’s main off-road motorcycle clubs.
