Geology & Formation

Vífilsfell is a classic example of a subglacial volcano, formed when magma erupted beneath thick ice during the Ice Age. The interaction between heat and ice created the mountain’s distinctive steep shape and layered structure.

The rock type found here, known as palagonite (móberg), is common in Iceland’s subglacial formations and gives the mountain its rugged, textured appearance.

History & the Story of Vífill

Vífilsfell is named after Vífill, a figure mentioned in Landnámabók (The Book of Settlements). He was a trusted servant of Ingólfur Arnarson, traditionally considered Iceland’s first settler.

According to tradition, Vífill was known for his loyalty and strength. As a reward for his service, he was granted his freedom and allowed to settle in this area.

One story says that Vífill was sent up the mountain daily to keep watch over the surrounding land and coastline, using the summit as a natural lookout point in the early days of settlement.
